Vietnam incentive destination
Hanoi Incentive Travel: Heritage Capital, Convention-Scale Venues, Old Quarter Logistics
Hanoi is the base for every North Vietnam incentive program. It combines Vietnam's largest purpose-built convention hall, heritage gala venues in the French Quarter, and cultural programming built around the Old Quarter. Most programs run 2–3 nights in Hanoi, then continue to Halong Bay.
Hanoi Incentive: At a Glance
Why Hanoi for Incentive Travel
Hanoi is Vietnam's political and cultural capital and the gateway for all North Vietnam circuits: Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Mai Chau. For incentive planners it offers two things in one city: venue infrastructure built for government summits and international conferences, and a heritage layer (Old Quarter, Temple of Literature, French Quarter) that gives reward programs a sense of place.
Convention-scale venues
The National Convention Center (NCC) main hall seats 3,500 pax in a single room and hosts Vietnam MICE Expo. JW Marriott Hanoi, next to NCC, adds a 950-seat theater ballroom with same-property accommodation.
Heritage gala formats
Sofitel Legend Metropole (built 1901) offers a 250-pax heritage ballroom in the French Quarter. Old Quarter private dining rooms take 100–150 pax for themed Vietnamese dinners with water puppets or traditional music.
Gateway to the North
Ninh Binh (Trang An, UNESCO 2014) is a 1.5–2 hour day trip. Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay connect by expressway or by seaplane. Sapa (5 hours) and Mai Chau (3 hours) extend longer programs.
Direct international access
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) has direct flights from Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taipei, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, major Chinese cities and Paris, with one-stop access from other European hubs and Australia.
Hotel Zones for Incentive Groups
Zone choice in Hanoi is a trade-off between walkable heritage access and coach access. The Old Quarter is the cultural heart but restricts coaches at peak hours; West Lake and My Dinh suit convention-led programs.
French Quarter — luxury heritage
Immediately south of the Old Quarter, around the Hanoi Opera House. Hanoi's flagship luxury hotels, walking distance to Hoan Kiem Lake, and wider boulevards than the Old Quarter for larger vehicles outside restricted hours.
- Contracted partners: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi (250-pax ballroom), Capella Hanoi, Apricot Hotel and additional 4–5 star properties
- Best for: Executive reward programs, heritage-themed galas, programs that want walkable evenings
- Operations note: Peak-hour coach restrictions still apply — plan arrivals outside 06:00–09:00 and 16:00–19:00
Old Quarter — heritage walking pace
The 36 guild streets dating to the 13th century, next to Hoan Kiem Lake, the night market and street food. The strongest sense of place, and the hardest zone to move a group in and out of.
- Best for: Smaller incentive groups, cultural programs, markets that value walkability
- Operations note: 28- and 45-seat coaches cannot enter during 06:00–09:00 and 16:00–19:00. Dong DMC time-shifts the movement, splits the group into 16-seat minivans, or stages the coach at a perimeter point near Hoan Kiem Lake with a cyclo or walking final mile
West Lake & My Dinh — convention-led
West Lake (Ho Tay) is ringed by upmarket hotels with a resort feel. JW Marriott Hanoi sits further west in Nam Tu Liem, next to the National Convention Center.
- Contracted partners: InterContinental Hanoi Westlake, Pan Pacific Hanoi, JW Marriott Hanoi
- Best for: Conference + incentive programs using NCC or the JW ballroom, longer stays
- Operations note: West Lake hotels are 15–25 minutes from Old Quarter sites — build the commute into heritage days
Typical Hanoi + Halong Bay Incentive Program
Hanoi rarely runs alone. The standard North Vietnam incentive is 4–5 days: Hanoi first, Halong Bay second, then back to Hanoi for departure flights. The Hanoi days below are the core; the Halong segment is planned on the Halong Bay incentive page.
Noi Bai meet-and-greet (áo dài and conical hat welcome available). Coach to the hotel, timed outside the Old Quarter restricted windows. Welcome dinner in an Old Quarter private dining room or a hotel ballroom with a traditional music ensemble.
Morning at Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple, then the Temple of Literature (founded 1070). Afternoon Old Quarter cyclo tour at golden hour. Evening water puppet show at Thang Long Theatre and street-food dinner, or the main gala.
Transfer to Halong Bay for an overnight cruise charter or a day on the bay from a Halong City hotel. Programs without Halong use Ninh Binh Trang An instead: bamboo boats through limestone karsts, 1.5–2 hours from Hanoi.
Return to Hanoi. Optional craft village half-day (Bat Trang ceramics or Van Phuc silk) before the farewell dinner, or direct transfer to Noi Bai for evening departures.
Hanoi Gala & Event Venues
Hanoi is Vietnam's primary destination for government, institutional and high-profile corporate conferences. Capacities below are published figures; for any venue without published pax-by-setup data, Dong DMC confirms capacity and AV in writing before it goes into a proposal.
Hanoi's purpose-built convention venue in My Dinh, host of Vietnam MICE Expo. Used for plenaries, award nights at scale, and as an overflow or expo site paired with JW Marriott for multi-stream programs.
1,000 sqm, 7 m ceiling, 540 classroom. Fansipan Ballroom adds 450 theater / 300 banquet. The simplest single-hotel option for 700–1,000 pax. Plan 4–6 hours setup for LED wall and rigging.
The 1901 French Quarter icon. Suited to executive rewards and top-achiever dinners where the venue itself is part of the reward.
Contracted private rooms with traditional Vietnamese set menus. Water puppets, áo dài welcomes and traditional music ensembles are built into the run-of-show.
Lakeside dinners at West Lake properties, including InterContinental Hanoi Westlake's over-water pavilions. A softer evening format after a heritage day.
Central and widely shortlisted, but pax-by-setup tables are not consistently published. Dong DMC presents them as candidates pending written capacity, ceiling height and loading route.
Hanoi Incentive Activities
Hanoi activities work best as half-day blocks timed around light and crowds. Sequencing matters more than selection: Hoan Kiem Lake at sunrise and the Temple of Literature in late afternoon give a different program than both at midday.
Old Quarter Cyclo & Walking Tour
The 36 guild streets at golden hour, ending at Hoan Kiem Lake. Cyclos also solve the final-mile problem when coaches cannot enter the Old Quarter.
Street Food Evening
Pho, bun cha, banh mi and egg coffee in small guided groups. Works as a stand-alone evening or as the first half of a night ending at the water puppet theatre.
Water Puppet Theatre
Thang Long Theatre on the eastern edge of Hoan Kiem Lake runs several shows daily. Can also be brought into a gala as a private performance.
Craft Villages
Bat Trang ceramics (13 km, pottery workshops for 10–40 pax per session) and Van Phuc silk (10 km, wooden loom demonstrations). Half-day, hands-on, good for team formats.
Ninh Binh Day Trip
Trang An bamboo boats, Hoa Lu ancient capital and Bai Dinh Pagoda. 1.5–2 hours each way; the standard alternative when Halong Bay is not in the program or weather closes the bay.
Michelin Dining
One-star restaurants Gia and Tam Vi for small top-achiever dinners. Group size depends on the restaurant — Dong DMC confirms private-room capacity at quotation.
Hanoi Operations: What Planners Need to Know
Old Quarter Coach Restrictions
28- and 45-seat coaches cannot enter the Old Quarter during 06:00–09:00 and 16:00–19:00. This is the operational signature of a Hanoi program. Dong DMC plans every arrival, departure and dinner transfer against these windows — clients only see whether the cyclo tour they were sold actually happened.
Airport Transfer Timing
Noi Bai to central hotels and to JW Marriott is typically 30–45 minutes, with more variability at peak hours. For high-stakes opening sessions, add about one hour of buffer on critical arrivals.
Best Incentive Season
October to April is cooler and drier — the best window for outdoor elements and Halong Bay. June to August is hot and humid; indoor events still run, outdoor components need a plan B. Typhoon risk on Halong Bay runs July–October.
Lead Time for Conference Space
For 200–1,000 pax programs using a primary ballroom plus breakouts, allow 6–12 months to hold the right pattern of space. Larger or expo-heavy programs pair JW Marriott with NCC on a timed shuttle loop.
